Who we are
In 1923, a Gentleman named Tom Green founded
Hillfoot Tool & Steel, with one member of staff, and a single
spring forging hammer. From then on, the company grew
steadily through the thirties adding another 3 hammers, and
into forties, by which time the company had grown to 30 employees,
with 8 steam driven hammers, and in combination with the stockholding
arm was supplying over 2000 tonnes of steel per year. Interestingly,
by the mid thirties, Hillfoot Tool & Steel was already an
established customer of Special Steel Co!
In 2005 Hillfoot Steel Group acquired Langley
Forged Products, and merged the Forges together on the Birch
Road site, where the company remains today.
In 2003 The Green family ended their day to day
operational involvement with The Hillfoot Group, before finally
selling the business to The Murray Metals Group in early 2008.
Seen as a non-core activity the Forge was immediately offered
for sale.
The Special Steel Group, having already identified
the requirement for a Forge, were pleased to be able to subsequently
acquire the Forge from the Murray Metals Group.
Upon acquisition of the Forge on September 1st,
the name was changed to Special Forged Products Ltd, in line
with other Group companies.
Since acquisition, Special Steel Group, is actively
looking to invest and improve on the already excellent capabilities
of the Forge, to ensure that it remains as the number 1 choice
for both sub-contract forging services, and fully supplied forged
components.
